Capital Assets Project Manager
Matthew Commandant – Project Manager, HSE Coordinator, Chair of Joint Health & Safety Committee and Emergency Control Group, and ICT infrastructure.
Matthew has worked for the Wahta Mohawks Council in various roles for 34 years. He is a dedicated and experienced community member currently serving as a Project Manager many of Wahta’s capital projects. In addition, Matthew leads Wahta’s Joint Health & Safety Committee and chairs Wahta’s Emergency Control Group. Matthew also has a key role in supporting the IT infrastructure within the administration.

Key Infrastructure & Capital Projects
- Oversee consulting firms retained to undertake feasibility and engineering studies.
- Manage capital projects throughout all phases, from project initiation, concept development, engineering design, construction, commissioning and handover.
- Collaborate with Indigenous Services Canada and Government of Ontario funded studies and projects during all phases of the studies and capital projects.
- Monitor and report on study/project progress and expenditures.
- Administration building roof replacement and repair and installation of new ground mounted furnaces.
- Construction of three new rental duplexes.
- Upgrade of water treatment systems at Admin building and rental units.
- Installation of two broad band towers and related equipment
- Installed seven standby power generators at the rental duplexes.
- Electronic signs at entrance of CHC and Admin buildings.
- Upgrade of IT infrastructure.
- Rebuild of a rental unit at the Triplex that had major smoke damage.
- Design and construction of new waste transfer station and landfill decommissioning.
- Installation of pavilion at CHC property.
- Lot development for future housing.
- Renovations and upgrades to the Church.
Current Projects
Construction of Waste Transfer Station and Closure of Landfill
This project was initiated based on (i) the findings of landfill assessment study which concluded that the landfill would reach its’ capacity in 2026/27 and (ii) our goal to modernize our approach and improve efficiency in handling waste and recycled materials. The scope of the project included a feasibility study, concept design, detailed engineering design, site preparation, construction as well as decommssioning of the landfill.
The cost of the project is $4.5 million and is fully funded by Indigenous Services Canada. As of July, 2025, the project is 95% complete, and is scheduled for completion in September, 2025.
Renovations and Upgrades of Rental Units
The scope of work (SOW)of this project include; replacement of windows/doors, upgrade electrical, new bathrooms, new cabinetry, new furnaces, new flooring, back up power generators.
The SOW was developed based on third party inspection conducted by the Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC).
ISC has provided $600,000 in funding to cover the costs of the renovations and upgrades.
As of July, 2025, 40% of the work has been completed.
Lot Servicing and New Rental Unit Housing Project at 2444 Kanien’kéha:ka Iohatátie
The scope of this project covers the development of housing lots, site preparation, supply and installation of two modular homes to be used as rental units, installation of septic systems and drilling of two water wells.
This $800,000 project is funded by Indigenous Services Canada.
As of July, 2025, the two houses have been installed. The remaining work is to drill two water wells, install water treatments systems, and for Hydro to run power. The target completion date for these remaining items is the end of September.
