Sarah Burnie is an integral part of the Health and Social Services department at Wahta Mohawks. The Ata’karitáhtshera tánon Shakotiienawá:se Social Services Coordinator is responsible for navigating the complex Social Services sector, building strong partnerships with community organizations/services, and ensuring equitable access to the support individuals and their families need to thrive.
Sarah specializes in connecting individuals and families with vital resources, advocating for their needs, and developing support plans that lead to positive change.
As the Social Services Coordinator, Sarah oversees the following programs:
• Ontario Works – Social Assistance
• Employment and Training – Kagita Mikam
• Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) and Medical Transportation
• Jordan’s Principle
• Family Violence Prevention

Ontario Works provides money for food, shelter, and other costs to people in financial need who meet the eligibility criteria.

You may be eligible for Ontario Works if you:

  • Need help with your living expenses, meaning you do not have enough money to cover your immediate family’s living expenses.
  • Are over 18 years of age.
  • Live in Ontario.

What you could get:

  • Help with the essential costs of living, such as food, clothing, and housing.
  • Health benefits for clients and their eligible family members.
  • If you are eligible for Ontario Works, the amount of money you get will depend on your specific situation. In most cases, you must to participate in employment-related activities to get financial help.

If you are eligible for Ontario Works you could receive:

  • $733 a month for basic needs and shelter.
  • additional amounts for benefits and other family members who live with you.

Kagita Mikam Aboriginal Employment and Wahta Mohawks offer a variety of services to its members to help them with their employment and training goals.

These services include:

  • Pre-employment skill development.
  • Assistance with job searching.
  • Referrals for training courses
  • Offering training courses and events to members
  • Guidance and assistance with Kagita Mikam Aboriginal Training & Employment intake applications for course funding.

Pre-employment supports:

  • Essential basic skills assessments.
  • Resume building.
  • Job search assistance.
  • Interview preparation supports.

Partnering with Wahta Mohawks, Kagita Mikam Aboriginal Employment and Training Inc. provides funding for members to return to school or engage in a training program so that they can get back into the workforce, or to improve career opportunities. Support is available upon meeting the criteria and funding availability. Intake applications are available on an ongoing basis.

Various programs are available through Kagita Mikam including:

  • Course costs
  • Wage subsidies
  • Mobility assistance to help with the costs of travel to and from training and supports for youth and entrepreneurs
